An Electric Vehicle Modernized 12V Auxiliary System

OUR PROJECT:

This system can replace a dated or prohibitively complex 12V system with an all in one solution for a Human-Machine Interface with sensors, devices and more. Similar to an aftermarket Vehicle-Control Unit/Motor-Control Unit, replacing factory components with an easier to program interface that is affordable and open source.

Hardware

Built on Raspberry Pi 4

With Raspberry Pi4 as the core, the use of external modules allows us to deploy a formidable Human-Machine Interface intended for use in Electric Vehicle Conversions.

Raspberrypi.com

Waveshare 2-Ch CAN Hat

A CAN Bus communication module, using Serial Peripheral Interface, allows our Raspberry Pi to interact with new and existing CAN Bus devices.

Power Delivery Module

Enovation Controls IX3212 Power Delivery Module will replace existing fuses and relays and is operated through both CAN messages and 12V digital inputs.

Capacitve Multi-touch Touchscreen 10.1"

10.1" LCD Touchscreen gives a bright and high-resolution display while the rear of the unit has threaded fittings to tidily mount the Raspberry Pi and accessories.

Software

OpenDash

OpenDash is an application run by our device to act as a platform for AndroidAuto, Multimedia, a Backup Camera and is expandable through the use of plugins which have been added for CAN Bus functionality.

Qt IDE

QtCreator is an Integrated Development Environment used to create Graphical User Interfaces for a variety of application, such as Television menus, Desktop Applications and Automotive Displays. We used Qt to design the plugins present on OpenDash.

CAN Utilities

Our plugin uses CAN bus functionality built into Qt, as well as the Linux-based "can-utils" API, to transmit, receive and decode incoming CAN messages. The open-source community has a trove of CAN Bus utilities that can be implemented in future endeavors, such as SAE J1939 Database decoding, OBDII Diagnostics and even file transfers.

Dylan Davis
Hardware &
Software

Dylan brought his passion for embedded systems and electric vehicles to begin tackling the challenge of integrating both hardware and software for the project. Using the Qt IDE, Dylan designed GUI and implemented the programming necessary to create the user feedback and control the PDM on the CAN bus network. After completing the Electrical and Computer Technologist – Renewable Energy program, Dylan is pursing his Computer Engineering degree at the University of Victoria.

Tyrell Collins
Software, 3D Design &
Media

Highlighting a long-held interest in multimedia production, Tyrell utilized his skills creating the logo with Adobe Illustrator, designed and animated the enclosure in Autodesk Fusion 360, and commanded visuals using video production software Adobe After Effects. Additionally, Tyrell worked in the Linux OS helping to troubleshoot the projects challenges. Moving forward after graduation Tyrell will be working towards becoming a certified Professional Technologist.

Walter Parsons
Hardware & Communications

Drawing from experienced gained during co-ops, Walter has taken a lead with component purchasing, hardware troubleshooting and project communications. Following graduation from the Electrical Engineering Technology - Marine and Industrial program, Walter intends to attain his Professional Technologist designation.
